Progression and Credit

Progression Accord

All of SELLLN's partner institutions are signatories to a Progression Accord. The Accord lays down the principles of the network and underpins each of the progression agreements set up between further education and higher education institutions. The document demonstrates a commitment by all partners to support vocational learners living, studying and/or working in South East London to access higher education.

About progression agreements

Educators and education support staff

SELLLN has established a Progression and Credit Group with representation from across the network. This group is overseeing the development and implementation of a Progression Accord, which demonstrates the commitment of our partners to working together to support vocational learners to progress to and through higher education.

We have also developed a series of progression agreements that will help deliver the commitment expressed in the Accord document. The agreements specify the entry requirements that will enable learners to progress onto specified HE programmes or groups of programmes.  They describe the additional arrangements between universities and colleges about how they will work together to support vocational learners. In some cases, they also offer guaranteed interviews to learners who meet the entry requirements. Some progression routes are well established, and there is no need for an agreement to support learners on these courses.  The focus for the development of progression agreements has been where practitioners have identified progression to be problematic and the creation of an agreement would make a real difference to vocational learners.

SELLLN has negotiated progression agreements in the following subject areas:

  • Biomedical Sciences
  • Business
  • Computing
  • Design
  • English / English with Film Studies
  • Nursing
  • Psychology
  • Social Work

Please click on the links below for details of the existing agreements.  We currently have agreements for learners at Bexley, City of Westminster, Greenwich Community, Lambeth, Lewisham, South Thames, Southwark and Tower Hamlets colleges.

Learners

SELLLN’s aim is to help people with vocational qualifications continue on to university study.

One way to accomplish this has been to negotiate special arrangements – called ‘progression agreements’ – between our partner colleges and universities.

If you’re currently studying at a SELLLN partner college, you might be able to take advantage of a progression agreement your college has made with one or more of our partner universities.

Depending on the agreement, you might be able to benefit from:

  • Additional help with your UCAS application
  • Special events at SELLLN partner universities
  • Help to top up your academic skills
  • A guaranteed interview
  • Extra time for your tutor to write your reference, if you are on an Access programme – this means you have a bit more time to develop your skills before your tutor is asked to comment on you and your work.

We mainly work in four priority areas:

  • Business, Leadership and Enterprise
  • Creative, Communications and Media
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Construction, Engineering and Technologies

Curriculum development

We are also working on a wide range of curriculum and course developments in our four priority sector areas. This involves the development of new courses where gaps in provision have been identified or making changes to existing courses, for example, to make them more flexible for learners. We are working with key partners/stakeholders including employers, Sector Skills Councils and LLU+, a specialist professional development unit in Language, Literacy and Numeracy Skills.

Credit

In the area of Credit, SELLLN commissioned a report on the use of Credit across the network.  A response to the report, outlining a number of recommendations on how the LLN can move forward in supporting vocational learners' progression using credit, has been agreed by the Progression and Credit Group.
